Elementary Education Residency Licensure Certificate (55490) CIP 13.0101

The Elementary Education Residency Certificate curriculum provides a course of study leading to the development of the general pedagogical competencies needed to become certified to teach by the North Carolina Department of Public Instruction. Course work includes learning theory, instructional/educational technology, diverse learners, school policies and procedures, expectations and responsibilities of educators, teaching strategies/methods for specific content/specialty areas, formative/summative assessment, data informed practice, and classroom organization/management to enhance learning.

Graduates should meet general pedagogical competencies and demonstrate effective teaching practices. Additional requirements, such as pre-service training, passing the state required assessments, and the criteria included in the North Carolina Teacher Evaluation System, are required for licensure.

 

Additional Information:

Rowan-Cabarrus Community College offers the Elementary Education Residency Licensure Certificate through its Educator Preparation Program (EPP). This program supports individuals seeking teacher licensure in North Carolina and is structured as a Residency Licensure program (formerly known as lateral entry). Enrollment in the EPP is required for those pursuing licensure through this pathway.

Applicants must meet the following criteria: be a United States citizen or eligible for employment; hold a bachelor’s degree with a minimum grade point average of 2.7; have completed at least 24 semester hours of general education coursework; be currently employed as a teacher in a North Carolina public school or public charter school; and submit a signed Residency Licensure Form from the employing Public School Unit.

Prospective students are encouraged to submit transcripts for review to determine eligibility. Additional information is available on the Educator Preparation Program webpage. Verification of current employment in a public or charter school setting is required for admission and continued participation in the program.  Please contact the Education Preparation Director if you have any questions.
