American Literature I ENG-231

This course covers selected works in American literature from its beginnings to 1865. Emphasis is placed on historical background, cultural context, and literary analysis of selected prose, poetry, and drama. Upon completion, students should be able to analyze and interpret literary works in their historical and cultural contexts.After successfully completing ENG-112/113/114, students are eligible to take any literature course; the numerical I (1) and II (2) indicate only the time period covered, not the order in which to take the course.

This course is a Universal General Education Transfer Component course that is guaranteed to transfer for general education equivalency credit to each of the 16 institutions in the University of North Carolina system.
